 Sam was recently featured prominently in the series MARTIN SCORSES PRESENTS "The Blues" that aired on PBS and has been released on video. He has won the W.C. Handy Award for best drummer so many times he's lost count.
He began his career backing his father, Robert Nighthawk. Frank Frost played guitar in the band and the two struck a partnership that lasted until Frank's death in 1999. They both backed Sonny Boy Williamson before founding The Jelly Roll Kings in the late 50s. The group recorded for Sun/Phillips, Jewel, Earwig, Appaloosa, Evidence & Hightone over a 35 year span. After Frank's death Sam turned to studio work with many of Fat Possum Records artists and more recently with Buddy Guy on his "Sweet Tea" album. The Delta Jukes is Sam's working Juke Joint band and features a revolving lineup. The mainstay is guitarist, bassist, singer Dave Riley. The Jukes recorded one previous album for Black Magic Records.
